What's it like to be a Bricklayer?
Bricklayers work in the construction industry building walls, houses, partitions and other residential and commercial structures. Bricklayers may use bricks and blocks made from various materials such as clay, concrete and stone. The work can be physically demanding.
Tasks and duties
- Carry out manual bricklaying according to plans and specifications.
- Use mortar to bind bricks in various rows, designs or shapes.
- Cut and shape bricks, blocks or stones.
- Repair and maintain brickwork.
How to become a Bricklayer
To become a Bricklayer you are required to complete some formal training, as well as an apprenticeship. Additional certification requirements may vary between states, so it’s important to check with the relevant authority in the state in which you work.
- 1.Complete a Certificate III in Bricklaying/Blocklaying (CPC30111) at a TAFE or Registered Training Organisation, or as part of an apprenticeship.
- 2.Undertake construction induction training and obtain a White Card through a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
- 3.Check with the relevant building authority in your state as to whether there are any additional certifications required to work as a Bricklayer.
