A culture focused on image and self preservation rather than competence or community service.
The good thingsThe hours are generally predictable, and there’s a good work life balance. It’s a good place for people who prefer a slower pace or want to build local government experience
The challengesThe issues stem from the top down. Leadership capability and culture across the CEO and executive levels need major improvement. Many roles are filled by people with limited relevant experience, which often results in misplaced priorities, inefficiencies, high costs, extended timeframes, and suboptimal outcomes for both staff and the community. The culture prioritises self preservation and maintaining appearances over competence or accountability. Criticism from the CEO and executives of senior leadership and other staff, while not uncommon, is often delivered in front of others in an unprofessional and inappropriate manner. Constructive initiative is discouraged, and communication from management is frequently indirect or inconsistent. Staff turnover is high, and morale is low. A stronger focus on professional standards, transparency, and genuine leadership would greatly improve outcomes for both staff and the community.
