What’s it like working at City of Melbourne?

    AI summary of recent reviews

City of Melbourne offers several attractive benefits including competitive salaries, good work-life balance with flexible arrangements and RDOs, and a supportive team environment. The organisation's central location is also valued by employees, providing easy access to public transport and city amenities.

However, employees face some challenges including multiple layers of middle management which can slow down processes, outdated systems that can impede innovation, and limited career development opportunities. The facilities vary in quality, with some older buildings lacking modern amenities and accessibility features, though improvements are being made with newer facilities.

Toxic and zero trust culture - 'presenteeism' valued over actual outputs and engagement.
The good thingsNot many good things to say about the City of Melbourne. Salary is good but that is about it. The main buildings are close to everything, and the city has a nice vibe when it isn't blocked by protestors. Our team are in a newer facility so that is better than the old, converted car park we used to be in.
The challengesUnless you are in a newer building, there is NO adaptation for anyone with a disability, not even toilets! One floor in our old building didn't have a female toilet - we had to go up or down a floor! This building is still in use! For an organisation that champions "diversity'' you won't find an all-gender toilet anywhere in a corporate building. If you are considering a role here and need flexibility - you need to know there is ZERO flexibility to the point where I am sure it's not even compliant with legislation. The push for a 5 day in office culture is driving good people out of the door. Any new people considering working here would do well to not ask for any flexibility during your interview. This is being led from the top and policed heavily. There are two sets of conditions, so staff on the older award are better off even by doing less so there isn't a lot of incentive. Graduates tend to burn out quickly and leave due to the workload along with poor leadership and support.

Working for the City of Melbourne was the single biggest mistake I have made in my career, it was a horrible experience and I'd advise anyone who considers them to beware.
The good thingsI can't think of any
The challengesManagement were rudderless and had little interest in what is great about Melbourne. Days were filled with meetings about nothing - I left after 6 months as the toxicity became unbearable. I have dealing with the CoM in my current role and if anything they look like they are worse which is pretty hard to believe. Staff that were not on the legacy employment deals farely lasted a year.
