What’s it like working at NSW Education Standards Authority?

    AI summary of recent reviews

Employees consistently praise NESA for its good, helpful and hardworking people who create a warm, grounded and non-political environment. The organisation is described as inclusive and appreciative, where employees feel their voice matters and they work as part of a team with a shared commitment to supporting the NSW education system. The flexible culture and genuine value placed on work/life balance are also highly regarded by staff.

However, there are some potential challenges, including heavy administrative layers and complex approval processes that can lead to delays in delivery and communication. The slow pace of the organisation can make it difficult to respond quickly in a fast-moving environment. Additionally, some positions are contract-based, requiring employees to reapply at the end of their contract period.

    A well-intentioned but stifling bureaucracy
The good thingsNESA is an organisation with many good, helpful and hardworking people.
The challengesNESA is emblematic of the general state of the NSW public service, where messaging trumps policy, and optics always overrules substance. A top-heavy bureaucracy held captive by its timid executive class, the business of the organisation is chiefly the maintenance of the status quo via a complicated and expensive bureaucratic process that squanders time, money and the good work of ordinary employees.

Just a lovely team to work with :)
The good thingsI loved my time with NESA. I was on the operations team for the 2025 HSC examinations. You won't find a more grounded, non-political, warm organisation to work for. I would highly recommend this organisation

Supportive and inclusive culture where employee input is genuinely valued by management
The good thingsWorking at NESA means being part of a team where your voice actually matters. The environment is inclusive and appreciative, with a shared sense of purpose that supports the NSW education system. It’s rare to find such a dedicated group of professionals who truly care about the impact they have on NSW students.
The challengesNESA offers a supportive culture and a shared commitment to NSW students, but the slow pace and heavy administrative layers can be frustrating. Navigating the complex approval processes often leads to significant delays in delivery and communication. While the people are great, the bureaucratic hurdles make it difficult to be agile or provide prompt responses in a fast-moving environment.
