How to deal with salary interview questions? In a screening interview I just had, the HR person asked my salary range straight off the bat and I felt put on the spot because usually that comes up later. What's the best thing to say in this situation? I'm not good at wheeling and dealing but I also don't want to undersell myself.

I am working in HR, and the best way to answer this question is to provide a salary range. For example, you could say 70,000 to 75,000 per year. If they ask why, explain that your range reflects your skill set, experience, and the market research you have done.

They filter that at the application stage. The algorithm sorts out 80% of the answers because people are forced to enter salary-range expectations before hitting the submit button. It's unfair to people with serious skills and experience, as recruitment companies have budgets, and employers don't get to find that perfect fit. The game has become a data mining exercise. I have noticed that after many applications, I'm getting spam emails daily, just hours after the application process here.

Early salary questions can feel awkward. I usually say something like, I’m flexible and open to the market rate for this role. Gives you room without underselling yourself.

Compensation and Benefits Specialist
Having worked as a Compensation Specialist for several years my advice would be to prepare by looking at similar roles online and what they're offering to get a ballpark figure. If you're in the moment trying to come up with a number, think of your last job and the pay rate then consider if this is a more advanced role or a sideways move. If sideways add 5 to 10% on, if a step up in responsibility and experience then maybe 20% more - plus make it a range starting there. eg. 50k is now 52.5k.

Know what your worth firstly. What are your expectations? Saves a lot of time! Some employers want ‘the cheapest’ and you are better off knowing that is how they think! You don’t need that.

You can always put it back in their court by asking 'What salary had you attached to the position?

Wages are a very personal matter,I think Employers need to realise the job role is more important than what the Salary Package. For me I become put off when the Employers ask this first question.

Look up each role in ChatGPT - and what the salary expectation should be. Don’t fret - it isn’t a hugely important question, it’s more for an employer to gage your understanding and expectations in order to inform you of what the role actually provides. It isn’t a make or break question
