Do I have to go to the work christmas party? I just… do not want to go. I have too much on and no time for fake socialising. What’s the etiquette here--how do I politely get out of going without seeming like the grinch?

I avoid work parties like the plague. Too many dramas, too much information is shared that may be used against you later. It's a risky business these days. Besides most colleagues just harp on about work anyway.

If depends if it's on company time / a work day or not, my work Christmas parties were usually on work days and we were required to stay until the work day had finished. Some people would stay out and others would go as soon as business hours had finished.

Sick cat, sick kid, headache as you were heading out the door, partner got sick, literally put it in your calendar wrong and thought it was the day after. Easy!

You only have to misbehave at one, nothing major. Nothing enough for warnings or disciplinary action, just be a bit weird or loud. Then your absence from events will be welcomed without having to be asked not to come.
