Chef de Partie
Hi everyone,
I've been a qualified chef for 23 years, but lately I've been feeling completely burnt out and have lost the passion I once had for cooking. At 38, the idea of starting over in a new career feels pretty overwhelming—especially with financial responsibilities like a mortgage.
I'm considering a mature-age apprenticeship to make a career change, but I'm concerned about the income side of things. Are mature-age apprenticeships generally low-paying.
Thx

Cheffing is tough! Have you thought about getting a certificate and teaching cooking, especially to ndis participants? It’s a great avenue I’ve seen a lot of chefs take!

Finance Officer
I have already bern working in an administrative positions. My last office job was with Toyota Finance. That job burnt me out so quickly I quit after 2 months. I then volunteered for St John as Community Patient Transport Officer while deciding my next move. I am now a full time permanent employee with Medical Edge Australia as First Responder. Was it daunting? Yes. Was it worth it? Definitely. I feel more respected in the public and feel good about myself

Chef
I was a Chef till 35, swapped to a mature aged apprentice. I was on 65-70k a year working weekends and 45hours minimum. Now I earn 70k as first year and have weekends off and 35-40 hours weekly.
I would say if you can find the right industry that will pay you above award go for it!
Only be aware that your body does have an expiration date with some trades. Good luck

Bus Driver
Pretty much a mirror of my story. I was a chef for 20 years, burnt out at 40. Transport my friend, driving trucks or buses, pays good money. You can find free opportunities to upgrade your licence. Get paid full wage while training. Still young, do it now

I suggest you work as a Aviation Screening Officer. Its very good money and you will find it very easy as you have done Chefs. If you are looking for the money otherwise career way there is not much progress. But you can earn upto 85,000$/ year without even overtime.

Hey, mature-age apprenticeships can pay less at first, but some industries and employers offer higher rates or support. With your skills and experience, you’re not starting from scratch, exploring options and incentives can help you plan a smoother transition ;)

Before giving up, you own your own restaurant?
a lot of people think they lost the passion, but what actually happened is that they hate where they work.
Having your own business, even when small can bring the passion back, and different from what people think, does not need to start big with hundreds of thousands in investment.
You can start with a small food truck you only do on the weekend to test, you only cook what you want, on your time, with your proccess, and see where it goes.
