are jobs heavily dependent on qualifications and experiences nowadays? I've extensive experiences in many different fields, IT, labours with tools, welding, even manage teams and business admin for small business but currently i'm looking to start change my career to learn more about office work in corporation or even just mid-size company but are not even get considered for reception or admin assistant roles. am i apply the wrong way or is it just that competitive?

I find that with most employers, that you could be literally the most productive, honest and hardworking person on the planet but they only see you as a round peg for a square hole.

if you know how to use your phone and a vape and can count to 2 you've got the job. if you have skills and experience you might as well sign up for the dole.

my old boss hired somebody that didn't know the difference between a Phillips head screwdriver and a flathead screwdriver.

Try going for admin after 60 & time spent doing other things! Ageism is very real, as is unwillingness to use “old” computer skills ….!

In Australia, it’s not about your qualifications—it’s all about who you know. Professional credentials don’t mean much here. You could end up as the director of a technical institute with a degree in performing arts, or a technical supervisor with just a trade certificate. Anything’s possible, but don’t expect your education or experience to get you very far. It’s less about what you know and more about who you’re connected to.

I think your words get you a job these days not your skills. in my old job I could do everything and would train others. and I'm from the old world where if you did something wrong or was not fast enough you would get shouted at until you got it right and then you would still get shouted at. thats how I would train people but I've found out you can't shout at people these days lol.

It’s really hard to change career. I have extensive experience in hospitality and lot of my skills are transferable to office environment. It took me a good 6-8 months before I secured an office role. I was in total shock to be honest, to find out how hard it is. I wrote custom cover letters, amended my resume multiple times, signed up for linked in premium and even got a resume writer.
I finally secured a part time office role but I’m not sure how easy it will be to get a full time role.

What’s worked for me is tailoring my CV for each role... have you tried this? If not yet, it might help! Office and admin jobs can get heaps of applicants, so matching your wording to the job ad and highlighting things like coordination or communication skills can really make your experience stand out.
