I resigned from my previous workplace because I stopped getting personal and professional support from my employer once I said I was pregnant. They were aggrieved by my resignation (the reason for which I explained was just that I needed a break from the field (which was not the case)). I did and said everything I could to ensure we ended on good terms. I now need that employer to be my reference for a new job, but I am worried they will berate me for it. What should I say in my email to them?

Sounds like you did everything you could to leave on good terms Lucy. Just keep it polite and professional and hope they do the same. Good luck.

Sounds like you did everything you could to finish up on good terms Lucy. I think all you can do is keep it polite and professional and hope they respond in kind. Good luck with it.

Is the new role in the same field? Thats the only thing Im thinking they might scratch their head about (still not a reason to bad mouth you), people are allowed to change their mind. If you were a good employee, then you were a good employee.
The worst they can do is say no to giving a reference. If they were to do a bad reference, thats risky on their part, esp after the way things went down.

Every time I've been worried about stuff like this, turns out no one cares. I'd just drop them a short note asking for the reference, they'll probably be fine. Easy to over think!
