I’m curious. Do recruiters want or even care about cover letters for job application? I feel like before AI you could stand out by writing a good cover letter but nowadays anyone can just use chatgpt and word vomit out some generic rubbish. Keen to hear your thoughts.

I'd say they're more relevant than ever Mich. I was hiring for a job recently and found that I could spot people using AI to write cover letters a mile off. Just my opinion but it wasn't a good look. The people who wrote thoughtful and relevant cover letters stood out in comparison and were the ones who landed interviews.

I’ve overheard hiring managers comment that they don’t even look at applications without cover letters, most are Centrelink filling quota for benefits

A cover letter is crucial to introducing yourself to your new potential employer. As someone who has worked in HR, I only looked at resumes with a cover letter. It shows you will go that step further than a resume. A cover letter needs to show relevant skills for the job you are applying for. It needs to showcase those skills so the job hunter can look at it and make a decision as to whether to move on and look at your resume! Always provide a cover letter relevant to job applying for.

Cover letters are so important these days as it distinguishes you from everyone else. You need to make sure you are able to capture who you are in the letters. I would read them as an employer, and it’s more important to me than just the CV. A nicely written cover letter tells me more about you and why I should hire you.

As a hiring manager, I'm getting equally sick of wading though pages of generic AI generated fluff that tells me nothing about the candidate. I now mostly skip past these completely, and focus on the ones that look human. Now more than ever, a genuine, straightforward cover letter will definitely stand out.

Google examples of other people’s cover letters, for the same position, then reword the cover letter with your personal skills. Just copy the format and personalise it.
I didn’t know what info I should include, so viewing other people’s letters gave me a better idea as to how long they should be, what skills the employer is looking for.
Also address the skills listed in their job description match it to YOUR transferable skills.

Please refer to Resume
I won’t look at a resume without a cover letter. It’s clearly noted in the ad that both are required, so if that instruction isn’t followed, I won’t bother reading the resume.

Don’t use AI but the company can…double standards there. I know no hiring person that is formulating a PD or job advertisement.
