Cover Letter or not to cover letter? Based on my experience, both as a HR admin, and as a candidate, is the accompanying cover letter a thing of the past? with available technology now, and time constraints - do we really read/need them?

It's a good question. The last role I was in, the employer said "Absolutely loved the cover letter". I went with something a bit more creative, but only because I was handing the resume over via email. Normally I wouldn't formart it that way when applying on a job app, because of ATS systems. I do think some employers still love a good cover letter, especially if it summarizes things to make their life easier. ☺️

I have a fair amount of work experience under my belt, and I believe that a well-crafted cover letter is essential for any job application. It is a fantastic opportunity to stand out from the other applicants, because hirers get a lot of signals from their various tech, but the cover letter is your chance to be uniquely you!

It’s a simple cut from the pack for me. If you can’t follow an instruction to provide one for your application you can’t follow instruction. So I cut you from the pack. I’m no longer interested and I don’t care how good the resume is. It’s all just words. I need to sort the pile and get to interview and I find out very quickly if you’re just words or have the skills.

2 schools of thought but I'm definitely in the yes camp. When I hire it's the first thing I look at as it shows (to me anyway) that they've thought about the job opportunity and we're not just one of a hundred generic applications sent out.

Yes, cover letters are an opportunity to tell your story and to include the reasons WHY you are a good fit for the role. The resume does not always communicate this. So I would recommend that you always include one to give yourself the best chance and opportunity to be successful. 🙏 Good luck…
