I’ve just landed my first job – a standard mon-fri office deal – and I have a question about clothes. I basically need to buy work outfits from scratch. The dress code at my workplace is "smart casual", so not suit pants or ties, thankfully. Can I get some advice on what staples I can buy to rotate through the week so that I don’t wear the same thing every day? I’m male btw. Two pairs of chinos plus three shirts? I only have $400 to spend on this before my first pay.

Have you tried thrift stores? I know they aren't everyone's vibe, but when I went from casual to more corporate, it saved me a fortune. Some stores will even sort the clothing, so all of the high end labels, and businesswear are on one rack. I've gotten heaps of stuff that still has the original tags attached too, which is a bonus.

I suggest two pairs of trousers - one navy and one beige/sand colour; a couple of polos (solid colours - burgundy, dark green, navy, med blue) and two shirts - one white dress shirt, one more casual style, and a blazer/sports jacket (dark solid colours) for meetings with the boss. And one tie (for the dress shirt and blazer. Don’t forget shoes - preferably leather lace/ups - black or dark brown. Good luck!

Check Connor’s online store. You can get 2/3 chinos for under a $100 at times and shirts are about the same price. $400 should have you sorted, my friend.

Summer, beige/camel chinos with light solid blue coloured collared shirt with light brown shoes. Winter, black or navy chinos with white shirt with pale grey/blue thin vertical striped collared shirt and black shoes. All can be purchased via Myer, Kmart, target etc. Smart casual for work doesn’t have to be expensive. Also, look around where you will be working and see what they’re wearing and what YOU feel comfortable with. Everyone is different, that’s a good thing! Congrats on your new job :)

Op shops could be great idea. I made a mistake early on where I would spend 100s in buying nice cloths, but no one really cares. as long as you are clean, not wearing worn off clothes, you'll be alright.
