My parents aren't being very supportive and my self esteem is suffering. They think I'm being too picky or not applying for enough jobs - and I'd just like some understanding from them. How can I convince them that it's not the same as it was in their day?

It's a really tough one and saying yes to any job can come with it's own problems too. Not sure how to convince them but it's important to back your judgement as you're going to be the person who has to see it through. Good luck!

Maybe you just can’t convince them. My parents were not supportive either… Focus on yourself, what you want and trust yourself, be polite to them but don’t listen to the discouragement.
If you really want to convince them, find an article from some reputable source, that confirms your experience. If they don’t believe you, they might believe the third party.

Not disregarding what the comments before have mentioned, each parents come with their own mindset and experiences associated with that mindset and perspective but my advice is to slowly open up about it in convos relating to it e.g. “yeah some jobs have an AI analyse the cover letters and resumes,” and by mentioning clues on the struggle of what the hiring process is like now compared to the generation beforehand, you can ease their process of realising that themselves.

Times have changed so much from 1980's to now .I went to tafe did a full-time trade course for 1 year and Bob Hawke ( your parents will know ) gave me austudy payments and the all the courses were free so much choice and work chances .
Your parents might just be forgetting our times compared to now and the challenges ahead with AI being a big distraction and hindering jobs and opportunities as well .
They do want the best for you but sometimes they don't know how to either communicate or express

Its challenging to comment from an outside perspective, not knowing the context however all i would to say to you is, don't give up, keep going. Forget about the climate in this generation, edit your resume, reset and keep going. apply apply apply. believe in yourself, you got this.

if you are a young person looking for a real job, but finding it hard, join the ADF. There are a large variety of roles, extremely good pay plus immense non financial benefits. I know this because I married an ADF Officer. They have it so good compared to the rest of society that almost is criminal. If I knew what it was like when I was younger, without a doubt I would have joined.
