Founder + CEO, Head of Marketing & Commercial
6 months of job seeking, mostly focusing on the industry I've worked in for 9 years. I've also been applying for hospitality work as I'm getting desperate, but no luck there either (15+ years experience).
Have been told I'm overqualified and underqualified. Have been in the top 10, top 5, and top 3 candidates, but still unemployed. I write a tailored cover letter for every role I apply for (in my regular industry), and have dumbed down my extensive hospitality CV.
What do I do?

Wanted to drop a comment and say it's not you - it's this brutal job market.
I'm in a similar situation and recently took the hospo plunge (assuming I'd have a job within a week). Took about a month before I landed a trial anywhere, and then I had to follow up multiple times in the weeks following my trial (after being offered a job that day), to receive proper confirmation and rostered shifts.
Seems that getting in front of people and relentless follow-ups are the only way, and luck.

Gonna pt 2 this -
Make a list of venues you want to work at and add in a couple you've seen looking for staff. Go on a traditional CV run with your hospo CV and just be yourself - no need to dumb down your experience. Every good venue operator knows another veteran when they meet them - you'll do great.
Re: applying in your industry - depending on what you do, track down a good recruiter who understands your industry and get some contract work if you can.

I totally understand where you are coming from. I have around 8/9 years of experience in my field, and after a personal break, I have started to apply for jobs but I have had no luck in getting any response. Some job ad's on seek have asked for your age, and I refuse to apply to that job even if I really connect with it. I don't know where you come form, but I believe that in my industry, it's got a lot to do with international workers wanting their PR. That's my opinion.

Also, it's event season soon! So there's heaps of work coming up. Send your resume to The Big Group, Showtime, The Arts Centre and just Google a bunch of catering and events businesses. There will be no shortage of work from the end of September til the end of March next year.
