Hi all, I am a business student graduating next year who eventually wants to get to director level at a reasonably big or even global company.
Question: is it worth applying to smaller companies when I graduate or should I just aim at the top brands in my industry from the start? I don't want to 'waste time' in an unserious job or somewhere that doesn't really add to my resume, but I'm not sure if I'd be limiting myself too much only going for big companies. Any advice?

If you're working in your field, you can't waste time in a job. It's all good experience.
I think though, smaller companies are better. The smaller they are, the more chance you have to do something else. To stand out, to help, to learn.
Bigger companies need bigger teams and they're all specialised. It's always someone else's job to do. Start out where you can get your hands on as much as possible.

I think both routes are great, IMO the recognizable company on your resume help to open doors later, but here's the key part everyone misses - once you're there, learn from absolutely everyone around you. Don't just focus on your tasks. Watch how senior people handle meetings, ask questions, figure out how decisions actually get made. The brand gets you in the room, but learning from others is what actually builds your skills.
